Chasing validation from society is like eating junk food; immediate gratification but long term unhappiness. Find and build your real tribe, pour your energy, time and resources into them. Let the desperate clamoring masses charge by, we can do nothing for them.
There is a Cherokee Nation legend about an elderly Cherokee brave who tells his grandson about life. One is evil. He is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.
When PTSD, depression, anxiety and suicide become linked in the mind, the diagnosis can become a self-fulfilling prophesy. Especially, when the whole point of raising awareness is to save lives. In fact, PTSD does carry a serious risk of suicide. Many people will struggle with their traumatic memories for the rest of their natural lives.

Many will benefit significantly from treatment. Some will find their own ways to heal. Only a few will attempt suicide. Even fewer will actually die. Jonathan Douglas, C. He will always be angry and always fighting the white wolf. But if I acknowledge him, he is happy and the white wolf is happy and we all win. For the black wolf has many qualities — tenacity, courage, fearlessness, strong-willed and great strategic thinking — that I have need of at times and that the white wolf lacks. But the white wolf has compassion, caring, strength and the ability to recognize what is in the best interest of all.
To feed only one would starve the other and they will become uncontrollable. To feed and care for both means they will serve you well and do nothing that is not a part of something greater, something good, something of life. Feed them both and there will be no more internal struggle for your attention. And when there is no battle inside, you can listen to the voices of deeper knowing that will guide you in choosing what is right in every circumstance.
Peace, my son, is the Cherokee mission in life. A man or a woman who has peace inside has everything. A man or a woman who is pulled apart by the war inside him or her has nothing. Starve one or the other or guide them both. Believe it or not, we are responsible for our happiness and the quality that we bring to every moment of our individual lives.
For every suicide, there are many success stories of members who have been lost in the abyss or darkness but have gathered the necessary tools and found their Tribe on a pathway to self-discovery. This is not meant to portray the suicide of a first responder who has lost the battle between the Black Wolf vs White Wolf as a weak or lesser reslient individual.
But rather encourage those first responders who are still alive to choose life and stay alive by having positive lived experience examples who can demonstrate that there is a different choice.

This can be accomplished by embracing the assistance of mentors and allies, in the form of mental health professionals, positive lived experience individuals, family support, organizational and peer support structures, faith and spiritual leaders, our community, so we can and will flourish. Simply, connections. The return trip from the abyss can truly be transformational and it is never too late to navigate the voyage home. I can get a lot better from here. Feeling like this means I need to get help.
And help is out there. You need to tell someone where you are. Who will you call? Who will your buddy be? Make yourself that promise. And make that promise to the person that will be there for you, because, guaranteed, they want to help. Dee Rajska, C. There is no magic pill to recovery and growth. The journey from the abyss is a long trek involving lots of individual bucket work. However, it begins one foot after the other — regardless the size of the stride.
Nor does it mean that you will ever forget your trauma and not have any bad days in the future. Anyone who makes this claim is only fooling themselves while feeding one wolf over the other.
