And like all migrants, she misses the things she left behind. My memory clings to these things, and somehow, my distance increases their nearness to me—these things that are always for me both there and not. After all, it was there where her passion for photography and storytelling had begun. At first, she took pictures without a clear concept.

Ask the Rabbi

She was waiting for an idea to appear, for a sign to show in which direction to move forward. But somehow this absence became a way of being fully present and evolved into a method of work. When seen as a group, her photographs appear as a collection of reminiscences, as a glimpse into her subconscious. And these pictures tell us that, after taking off for distant hemispheres, Hoda has now discovered how to see what she has already seen.

Exodus: I See Myself in You (installation)

Hoda Afshar was born in Tehran, Iran. I enjoy teaching our two daughters about boats and gear and reading the current. I have lived in Idaho and Colorado my whole life.

About Hoda:

The Salmon and the Snake hold some of the best memories of my childhood. In high school and college I was trained as a machinist and welder and now use my manufacturing skills to make natural toothpaste and deodorant in my own business. Never would've thought!

Our Guides

I am excited to be a part of Exodus, both as a guide and business manager. I was properly introduced to whitewater adventuring after my family relocated to central Idaho, home of such legendary rivers as the Snake, Salmon, Clearwater, and the Lochsa. I feel privileged and blessed to have been able to enjoy the wild places of the American West my whole life, and it is a joy for me to get to share this special space with others whether they are old veterans themselves or experiencing it for the very first time.

I grew up in the mountains of central Idaho. With a logger for a dad, I had lots of opportunities to explore and discover the abundance of God's special creation I was privileged to call home. I learned to row a raft under the tutelage of my older brother about 20 years ago, and still have yet to satisfy my craving for whitewater and river memories. My wife Jill and I have been married for 18 years and have four amazing children.
